The First Holy Communion is a very important moment in your little girl’s life, and one that she’ll remember for years to come. It’s a big part of why the ceremony often has a strict dress code, which means it’s important to prepare properly for it.

Given the religious nature of the holy communion, modesty and conservative clothing is essential. As a parent you’ll likely receive specific guidelines on attire from your Church to ensure everyone is dressed similarly for the day. If you’ve got some questions in the meantime though, here’s our general guide to selecting the best dress, pure white communion shoes, and accessories for the big day.

Choosing the best dress

As we’ve said there’s usually a dress code for any communion ceremony that will give parents guidance on dress length, colour, the length of appropriate sleeves, and embellishments. It’s always a good idea to consult this before purchasing a new dress to avoid any disappointment!

Most ceremonies require the communion dress to be white, modest (at least mid calf length), with a short sleeve, and minimal embellishments. Lace is generally allowed as an overlay. And other colours like pale pink (almost white) or ivory may be allowed depending on your dress code.

When selecting an appropriate dress we recommend you opt for comfort over style to pick something she can wear for several hours! From our experience, comfort should be a factor above everything else.

How to find matching shoes

It can be difficult to find a pair or a few pairs of pure white communion shoes as fabrics (like satin) can change slightly under different lighting conditions.

Be sure to accessorise

Many ceremonies allow little girls to wear some accessories, as they may be outlined in the dress code. Some ceremonies may require accessories like white (or nude) tights or even white socks. We even stock those if you require them!
